Portrait of the Ensemble
Portrait of the Ensemble is a perceptual study of the ensemble through a sensory drawing process which is immediately rendered by the ensemble鈥檚 sonic response. With eyes closed, Elvira Hufschmid draws images as they emerge while sitting across the ensemble. The drawing process is simultaneously projected as the ensemble follows the process on the screen and responds instantly with an improvisation that resonates with the visual, spatial and audible situation, extending portrait drawing as a 2D genre into a time-based, multi-dimensional form of aesthetic experience.

Elvira Hufschmid is a multimedia artist and author in the field of processes of 'Aesthetic Transformation' and temporary art spaces. After graduating from the San Francisco Art Institute, USA, with a Master of Fine Arts in 鈥楴ew Genres鈥, she lived and worked in Berlin, Germany, for over 10 years. She taught as a Guest professor for 'Artistic Transformation' Processes at the Berlin University of the Arts and as a sessional faculty in the Department of Culture and Community at Emily Carr University. She has been an affiliated researcher at the Berlin Centre for Advanced Studies in Arts & Sciences (BAS) at the Berlin University of the Arts, Germany, (2017-19) and is a collaborator in the SSHRC-funded research project 鈥溾. Elvira is currently a second year PhD candidate in Cultural Studies at Queen鈥檚 University, Canada.
